The proxy server offers full remote control of your AS/400 across any TCP/IP network, allowing virtual global management of the system , only restricted by the presence of a TCP/IP network. When connected to an TCP/IP network the operator console is capable to connect to any AS/400 in that network, allowing full management using only one operator console.

The function of the proxy server is solve two different types of problems: how to manageAS/400 systems remotely and how to reduce the number of operator consoles when severalAS/400’s are to be managed . For both problems the proxy servers offers the perfect solution and has many additional advantages.

The solution
The proxy server consists of two elements: the Terminal proxy located anywhere in the network and attached to the original operator console and the Host proxy located near the AS/400 and attached to the original operator console port and to the network. The basic principle of the solution is that the Host proxy presents itself as an original 5250 Terminal (or any other selectable terminal type) to the AS/400. All screen and keyboard information is communicated between the Host and Terminal Proxy.

Remote management
Remote management of computer systems becomes more and more important. Not only due to the ever increasing networks whereby the location of the computer is not necessarily near to the operator console or even not known, but also due to the increased safety precautions the IT manager has to take to safeguard his system(s) against terror attacks. In this last situation the vital computer systems are located in a bunker behind locked doors (lights out applications). In these cases the presence of a system operator near the computer is out of the question because it would mean a potential breach in the security measures but it also would be unpractical. Nevertheless the AS/400 expects the operator console within a limited distance. This contradiction is solved by the proxy server.

Proxy Server

The Proxy server enables any standard Twinax terminal, normally directly attached to theAS/400 console port, to manage the AS/400 via the TCP/IP network as if it was directlyattached. However, although this function will suffice in a number of applications, sometimes the AS/400 has to be re-IPLed.This requires the presence of the system operator at the AS/400 site and that was not possible. Therefore the Proxy server offers a unique feature. At the host side the Host proxy has a second connection to the special control port of the AS/400. Via this port the AS/400 can be switched off and on remotely.Hereto the RCP is displayed with the IPL switch and the LCD with the system messages. A truly unique feature offering full control of the system during IPL in applications where access to the system is not possible. System uptime is also increased in cases where the system needs attendance and the system manager is at home. Withthe Terminal proxy he can login to the system, giving a faster response by saving travelling time. If it is too expensive to install an original 5250 terminal at the system manager‘s home a standard PC can be used instead.

Reduced operator consoles
The number of Host proxies in a network is not limited. The means that with one operator console several AS/400 systems can be monitored and managed. Imagine a computer room with several AS/400 systems each having an operator console. In the adjacent room a shelve is stuffed with these terminals and the system manager is moving from console to console to control these systems. If more than one system manager are on duty the workplace is untidy because no one has his own place. The Proxy server solves this and the space problem.The Terminal proxy offers thesystem manager a menu from where any AS/400 in the network can be selected and fully managed.

Proxy Server

Sending system management data across a opennetwork can impose security problems when no proper
precautions are taken. The Proxy server has addressed this issue on two levels. Firstly the communication between the two proxies is proprietary and not publicly known. Secondly a optional encription feature is available which encripts all data.

The Proxy server is very easy to install and drastically saves on hidden installation costs. Just entering IP addresses and the host names completes the configuration.
